Joan Lader Keeps Broadway in Tune
  + stars: | 2024-02-07 | by ( Alexis Soloski | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For 41 years, Joan Lader has rented a slender studio apartment just west of Union Square in Manhattan. But for two generations of Broadway stars, as well as dozens of opera singers and pop and rock luminaries, she remains an indispensable vocal therapist and vocal coach. She continues to work seven hours each day, seven days a week. For Lader, 77, the work is her calling, a synthesis of artistry, science and according to her clients and fans, something akin to magic. “I’ve called her a witch in front of people, many times,” the music director Rob Fisher said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “The Exorcist: Believer” spun heads and drove off all foes at the box office. But while it nearly earned back its reported budget of $30 million in just a few days, the take for “The Exorcist: Believer” was underwhelming after the two companies paid $400 million in 2021 for the rights to a new trilogy. Another horror sequel, “Saw X,” was third for Lionsgate Films, with $8.2 million, and has brought in $32.6 million after two weekends. “The Exorcist: Believer,” $27.2 million. “Saw X,” $8.2 million.

CNN —“Disenchanted” asks the existential question, “What comes after ‘Happily Ever After?,’” which is, naturally, a sequel … only (because it’s 15 years later) for streaming. Amy Adams nimbly steps back into the role of an animated princess trying to adapt to the live-action world, in an epilogue to “Enchanted” that has moments of magic without completely delivering on the premise. As recounted in storybook fashion, Adams’ Princess Giselle settled down with her unexpected prince, single dad Robert (Patrick Dempsey), and had a baby with him. If there appeared to be room to creatively advance the mythology, “Disenchanted” merely chooses to recycle it. “Disenchanted” premieres November 18 on Disney+.

Halloween movies to get you into the spooky spirit
  + stars: | 2022-10-14 | by ( Chloe Melas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Halloween entertainment is serving major nostalgia this year, with some of our favorite spooky classics being remade, or better yet, getting a sequel. “Hocus Pocus 2” brings back Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as your favorite witches to get you ready for Halloween. “Halloween Ends”Jamie Lee Curtis in "Halloween Ends" Ryan Green/Universal PicturesForty-four years and 13 movies later, “Halloween Ends” is back to give you a fright. The movie tells the story of a man named Michael Myers who escapes an insane asylum. “Beetlejuice”1988 Warner BrothersBeetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!!!
“Hocus Pocus 2” should benefit from that dynamic, delivering a breezy sequel – 29 years later – that should provide go-down-easy Halloween viewing for families in the less-demanding confines of Disney+. Then again, this kind of movie hardly needs to reinvent the cauldron, representing more of a cut-and-paste job. While the not-too-scary hijinks are acceptable for kids, those scenes will likely deliver more of a kick for parents who caught the movie way back when, helping turn it into a Halloween favorite. By that measure, “Hocus Pocus 2” finds what amounts to the streaming sweet spot, feeling just big enough, but not too big. “Hocus Pocus 2” premieres September 30 on Disney+.
